Most of us know we should do our monthly self-breast exam, but life gets busy, it feels a little awkward, and before you know it… months go by. But here’s the thing: skipping your self-breast exam can mean missing early signs of breast cancer and early detection truly saves lives.
That’s why this October, we’re keeping it fun, memorable, and yes… a little cheeky.
🎃 The Pumpkin Method: Making Self-Breast Exams Unforgettable
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, imagine your breast like a pumpkin — yes, really! Pumpkins make the perfect visual reminder that your monthly self-breast exam doesn’t have to be scary or complicated.
Here’s how to do it, step-by-step:
Look: Stand in front of a mirror and look at your breasts just like you’d inspect a pumpkin for dents or color changes. Check for dimpling, discoloration, swelling, or anything that looks different — especially around your nipple or under your arms.
Feel: Using the pads of your fingers (not your fingertips), gently press in a circular motion all around your breast — top, bottom, center, and especially under the breast fold and toward your armpit. Feel for any unusual lumps, bumps, or changes in texture.
Raise and Repeat: Lift your arm over your head and repeat the same process. Sometimes this angle helps you feel areas you might miss otherwise.
Check the Nipple Area: Gently squeeze the nipple and check for discharge or changes in color or shape.
Repeat Monthly: Make it a ritual — tie it to something you’ll remember each month. You can even make it fun — maybe your “Check Your Pumpkins” day every October (and beyond).
Why It Matters
Most breast cancers aren’t found in a doctor’s office, they’re found by women themselves. A self-breast exam helps you know your normal, so if something feels different, you can catch it early.
Early detection isn’t about fear. It’s about power, the power to take charge of your health and maybe even save your own life.
So this October, grab your pumpkins, do your self-breast exam, and remind your friends to check theirs too. Because awareness is good, but action? That’s what saves lives.
