We’ve all heard “do your monthly breast checks” and then… didn’t do them. Life is busy, we forget, or we just feel awkward about it. But here’s the truth: skipping your monthly self-breast exam could mean missing something important and finding it later, when it’s harder to treat.
The good news? This isn’t a scary medical appointment. It’s a quick, five-minute ritual you can do right at home, no waiting room, no hospital gown, no copay. Just you, a mirror, and a little self-care.
Why a Self-Breast Exam Is Non-Negotiable
Here’s the jaw-dropping fact: most breast cancers aren’t found during doctor visits, they’re found by women themselves. That means if you’re skipping self-checks, you’re skipping one of the best tools you have for early detection.
A monthly self-breast exam isn’t about living in fear. It’s about knowing your body so well that the smallest change stands out. The earlier you notice something, the earlier you can do something about it and that can save your life.
How to Do a Self-Breast Exam Like a Pro
You don’t need to overthink this, just follow this simple step-by-step guide:
Start with a Look: Stand in front of a mirror, arms at your sides. Look for anything new — swelling, dimples, redness, changes in shape, or skin texture. Don’t forget to check underneath your breasts and toward your armpits.
Arms Up: Raise both arms over your head and check again. Sometimes this position reveals things you might miss otherwise.
Feel Standing Up: Use the pads of your fingers (not your fingertips) and make small circles covering the whole breast, from your collarbone to your underarm and down to the breast fold.
Switch Positions: Lie on your back and repeat the circular motion. Lying down spreads out the breast tissue and makes it easier to feel small lumps.
Take Your Time: Go slow enough to notice what’s normal for you and what isn’t.
Follow Up: If you find a lump, bump, or anything new, call your doctor. Not because you should panic but because being proactive is the goal.
Make It a Ritual You’ll Remember
Tie it to something you already do monthly, maybe the first day of your period or the first of the month. Put a reminder in your phone, or even pair it with something fun (favorite playlist, skincare night, or even your post-shower dance party). The point is to make it a habit, not a hassle.
Share the Love
This isn’t just for you, it’s for every woman you care about. Text a friend, remind your sister, talk about it over brunch. Self-breast exams aren’t taboo, they’re an act of love and empowerment.
